Cycling on the road has inherent risks, but then so does any sport. Here are some of the measures we take to minimise risk.

  1. There is a strong emphasis on cycle safety, considerate and defensive riding, and excellent group rider etiquette. There are regular safety briefings.
  2. Bicycles are checked regularly. Unsafe bicycles are not accepted in the program.
  3. We ride on quiet streets and cycle paths to closed loops or areas with minimal traffic. See the training page for details.
  4. Specific road rules relating to the route taken are explicitly taught and demonstrated to students.
  5. We cycle in groups of no more than 7 boys per member of staff, but often the ratio is significantly more favourable than this, usually with a member of staff at the front and rear of each small group of students.
  6. There are always 3 staff present for any ride on the road.
  7. Students are encouraged to look out for each other. Senior boys encourage safe riding. The groups wait at designated wait points if the group ever separates (e.g. at traffic lights).
  8. Boys are required to check in with staff on departure and return to ensure that everyone arrives safely.
  9. All races are carried out on closed roads. Criterium races are in small groups; younger grades contain fewer riders and are always marshalled by experienced racers.
  10. First aid staff (St John's Ambulance) are in attendance at every race. Two Trinity staff carry first aid supplies at every training session.
  11. Cycling Australia provides race insurance for students at the VICs events. Boys racing at other times including HCC Wednesday evening crits must have Cycling Australia membership which includes race insurance.
