To get the most out of the Great Vic bike ride, it's important that you prepare. You should increase distance and climbing gradually. Below is a training plan suitable for beginners. 

Holidays week 1: 16 September - 22 September

  • Total Distance: 30-40 km
  • Longest Ride: 20 km
  • Rides:
    • 1-2 shorter rides (10-15 km)
    • 1 longer ride (20 km)

Holidays week 2: 23 September - 29 September

  • Total Distance: 40-50 km
  • Longest Ride: 25 km
  • Rides:
    • 2 rides (15-20 km)
    • 1 weekend ride (25 km)

Holidays week 3: 30 September - 6 October

  • Total Distance: 50-60 km
  • Longest Ride: 30 km
  • Rides:
    • 2 rides (15-20 km)
    • 1 ride with hills (30 km)

Term 4, week 1: 7 October - 13 October

  • Total Distance: 60-70 km
  • Longest Ride: 35 km
  • Rides:
    • 2 moderate rides (20 km)
    • 1 ride with hills (35 km)

Term 4, week 2: 14 October - 20 October (Race 1)

  • Race: Tuesday 15 October 2024, 17:30, Sandown - ITT to Grade Riders
    • Adjust workload to account for the race.
  • Total Distance: 50-60 km
  • Longest Ride: 30 km
  • Rides:
    • Tuesday: ITT Race (20 km)
    • 1 moderate ride (25-30 km)

Term 4, week 3: 21 October - 27 October (Race 2)

  • Race: Saturday 26 October 2024, 09:00, Kew Boulevard (Teardrop) - Criterium
    • Focus on recovery rides before and after the race.
  • Total Distance: 70-80 km
  • Longest Ride: 40 km
  • Rides:
    • Tuesday: Recovery ride (15 km)
    • Saturday: Criterium Race
    • Sunday: Long hilly ride (40 km)

Term 4, week 4: 28 October - 3 November

  • Total Distance: 90-100 km
  • Longest Ride: 50 km
  • Rides:
    • 1 moderate ride (25 km)
    • 1 long hilly ride (50 km)

Term 4, week 5: 4 November - 10 November (Race 3)

  • Race: Saturday 9 November 2024, Casey Fields - Criterium
    • Balance training with recovery from the race.
  • Total Distance: 80-90 km
  • Longest Ride: 60 km
  • Rides:
    • 1 short flat ride (15-20 km)
    • Saturday: Criterium Race
    • Sunday: Long ride (60 km)

Term 4, week 6: 11 November - 17 November

  • Total Distance: 100-110 km
  • Longest Ride: 70 km
  • Rides:
    • 1 moderate ride (30 km)
    • 1 long ride (70 km)

Term 4, week 7: 18 November - 24 November (Race 4)

  • Reduce intensity slightly leading into ride week.
  • Total Distance: 80-100 km
  • Longest Ride: 50 km
  • Rides:
    • 1 short flat ride (20 km)
    • Saturday: Longer ride (50 km)
    • Sunday: Easy recovery ride (20-30 km)

Term 4 week 8: 25 November - 27 November (Great Vic week!)

  • Event: Thursday 28 Nov to Sunday 1 Dec 2024 - Great Vic Bike Ride
    • Taper for the event, with light rides leading up.
  • Total Distance: 20-30 km
  • Rides:
    • 1 light ride (10-20 km)
    • Rest the day before the event.
